Appointments are generally not required

For most pathology tests, an appointment is not required and clients presenting at our centres will be attended to in order. There are, however, a small number of tests that do require a booking. Patients who have booked for these specific tests may be seen out of order due to special timing requirements. Our staff always attempt to triage patients and prioritise those with current medical conditions or those who are not feeling well

What am I required to bring for my pathology testing?

Make sure you bring the pathology test request form that your doctor completed for you. We accept all pathology request forms. You are required to bring a valid Medicare card if we are to ensure that your Medicare covered testing will be bulk billed to Medicare.

What do I need to prepare for my testing?

It is better to drink plenty of water prior to your test as it makes it easier for staff to collect blood from your veins.

Fasting Collections

Your health care provider will usually advise you if you are required to fast prior to being tested. Fasting is necessary for certain tests (eg. Glucose, cholesterol, iron) because recently consumed foods and beverages can impact the accuracy of your test results.

  1. Fasting means that you abstain from all food and fluids other than water for a period of 8-12 hours prior to your test.
  2. Fasting means taking nothing but water- no juice, no fruit, no tea or coffee, nothing but water for 8-12 hours prior to your test.
  3. Avoid smoking during the fasting period.
  4. You should not fast for more than 16 hours prior to your testing.

How do I get my results?

Routine pathology results will usually be performed within forty-eight hours of its collection; more specialised tests can take up to a week. to perform. At the time pathology is requested organise a follow up appointment with your Doctor to discuss your test results with her or him. Even “normal” test results have implications for your treatment.

Do I have to pay anything for my tests?

Pathology test costs are generally paid by Medicare. Abbott Pathology will generally bulk bill (i.e. no gap payment) tests covered by Medicare. There are however rare occasions where payment may be required such as where you or the test is not covered by Medicare. As such your Doctor will be careful to order only necessary tests.
