Dr Kavitha Jayachakaran is able to insert and remove Mirena & Copper IUDs. Most of our Doctors can remove IUDs as well, but do not insert them.
Generally an appointment is necessary prior to insertion of an IUD for discussion of suitability, pre & post insertion care; some women may need antibiotics prior to insertion. You will also require a script to buy your IUD from the chemist. Insertion of an IUD is best at certain times in your menstrual cycle. As such insertion is planned for a subsequent day and preferably in the afternoon so you can finish your day’s activities and can rest after insertion. Therefore insertion may not be possible at your first appointment, but we will endeavour to consider your convenience.
Referrals welcome from other GP practices- please send a copy of the following if available, else this will be done at initial appointment:
- Most recent PAP smear
- Vaginal swab
- Chlamydia & gonorrhoea PCR
Patients will be respectfully returned to the care of their regular GP following insertion & check up 6 weeks post insertion.
As these procedures take time & involve setting up, it would be helpful to let the receptionist know at time of booking that your appointment is for “IUD insertion”
