HEALTHY HABITS WORKSHOP – Small steps in the right direction

Our clinic has always been committed to helping children, parents and families achieve a healthy lifestyle now and for the future. Healthy habits in each individual ripple out to those around us.

A well child visit is a great time to track your child’s growth and development. Find out if your child is as healthy as they should be and what you can do about it.

Want to get your kids to eat more veggies? Drink more water? Sleep earlier? Spend less time in front of a screen? Let us help you guide your children towards healthier habits starting this school term. Get more control over your family’s health with strategies your kids will enjoy & without the usual stress & arguments

We are running a healthy habits workshop for children aged 2-10 this school term. A follow up workshop will be conducted a few weeks later to see how your family is doing and for further tips on keeping up new habits.

The components of a healthy lifestyle include:

  • Good nutrition
  • Regular exercise
  • Good sleep hygiene
  • Healthy emotional growth
  • Social engagement

Grandparents, childcare and friends & family play an important part in developing healthy habits in your children. Learn tips to involve these people in your life to build healthier habits in your children; nurturing children is a family focussed task.

Health related habits start in childhood and are influenced by daily family routines. This workshop is aimed at helping our young families develop healthy habits from an early age. Unhelpful habits from early childhood are difficult to reverse later in life when health problems start to appear. Childhood obesity is on the rise. Many families are at risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease at a younger age.

Your family’s health is important and lifestyle habits start early in life. These healthy habits are especially important if during the pregnancy, mum had:

  • Gestational Diabetes (sugar problems)
  • iron deficiency
  • pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure)
  • or if your child weighed more than 4kg at birth

Consults for work related injuries are not covered by Medicare. If you have a new work related injury you will be required to fill out a form advising your employer of a workers compensation claim. If your claim is successful, consult and medical report fees will be forwarded on to the appropriate insurer (eg. Work Cover). Once you have received a claim number, inform our reception staff so it can passed onto accounts.

Our mission is to help you nurture happy, healthy and confident young people by promoting a healthy family lifestyle and a healthy childhood weight through education, motivation and collaboration.

Shared Medical Appointments – HEALTHY HABITS WORKSHOP

What are Shared Medical Appointments (SMAs)

SMA (also called group visits) are individual consultations in a supportive group setting (approx. 10-15 other patients) where all patients can listen, learn and interact together.

Why Share Medical Appointments?

Traditionally, health care has involved one on one care with the doctor and patient. While this has worked in the past, it’s now less appropriate for the approximate 60% of medical visits now requiring longer and more personalised care.  Shared Medical Appointments are a way of providing better care to patients.

SMA’s are not suitable for everyone so we will continue to offer individual appointments to those who would prefer it.

How does a SMA work for general appointments?

A general consult SMA includes a GP and a nurse facilitator. Throughout the session the GP is involved in the usual doctoring tasks (for approximately an hour), but in conjunction with the facilitator who keeps the GP on time and helps manage the group dynamics. The nurse will help answer any questions, assist with general health concerns, percentiles & BP monitoring, lifestyle advise, and contribute to the group with up to date information.

As such, an SMA is a comprehensive medical visit, not just a group education session, but has the added benefit of peer support from 10-15 other people.

What can I expect from a SMA appointment?

The appointments will discuss topics around building healthier family habits with a view to preventing childhood obesity. Any more personal physical exams can be conducted separately in a private room.

Why should I attend a general SMA?

You get the benefits and support from other people who may have similar health problems to you.

You get more time with your doctor in a relaxed environment.

You get the benefits of having a practice nurse available to help with questions about your general health, lifestyle factors and get advice.

You or someone else may ask questions you might not have thought to ask.

It’s a great way to connect and interact with other people.

What about confidentially?

Anything more personal can be discussed with your GP or nurse in a private room or at a separate appointment. All who attend are asked to sign a confidentially agreement so that anything discussed in the consultation is not spoken about outside of the SMA. Examinations are conducted in a different room privately if required.
